About ocean model initialization in coupled simulation

Hello, We are runnig coupled simulation using CESM1.2.2, which features CAM5.3 with SE dynamic core. I found some slides online by Hanney et al., stating that coupled simulation with SE core shows significant SST cooling when starting with Levitus initialization.  The result is better when using spun-up ocean. I'm just wondering if there has been new update on this issue, and if not, is there a spun-up ocean product we could use as initialization for our simulation?  Thank you very much in advance.  Hui

Hui,
Regarding spinup files, best is to contact Cecile Hannay directly or anyone of the Ocean model working group (OMWG) http://www2.cesm.ucar.edu/working-groups/omwg

In: Cécile Hannay, Rich Neale, Joe Tribbia, Keith Lindsay and Gokhan Danabasoglu (2014), Coupled Simulations with CAM5.3. Ocean Spinup in CESM: Is it dycore dependant ? Atmosphere Model Working Group (AMWG) Meeting, Boulder, 10-12 February, 2014. [Presentation] For the spunup ocean, I used the initial conditions from /glade/p/cesmdata/cseg/inputdata/ccsm4_init/b.e12.B1850C5CN.ne30_g16.control.022/0145-01-01These conditions were obtained from a very long ocean spunup. You are welcome to use these.  (If you don't have access to yellowstone, I can put these on the ftp server). However, the ocean group thought that the ocean state was too far away from Levitus.

As we couldn't solve the problem of the SST cooling when starting from Levitus in time for the release, we decided to use finite volume for the next release

Thank you very much for the reply. Since we are mostly concerned about the ocean, I guess the best strategy would be to switch to FV core and initializa from Levitus. Would the tuning parameters (rhminl, rpen, dust_emis) listed in the talk for FV core be applicable to CAM5.3? Thanks very much,Hui

I believe so.Instead of starting form Levitus, you could start from the large ensemble at year 402. You will have spun the ocean for 402 years but this state is still to close to Levitus. This is the way we initialize our FV experiments.Initial conditions for the large ensemble at year 402 are at:/glade/p/cesmdata/cseg/inputdata/ccsm4_init/b.e11.B1850C5CN.f09_g16.005/0402-01-01

Perfect! Thanks Hannay for the suggestion.  I don't have access to the Yellowstone machine. Could you please make the restart file available through ftp? Thanks very much!Hui

Hello Hannay,
I am using CESM2.1 with F2000climo compset. First on setting the case and building it I got seven years output but I tried to continue it I got the following error in the cesm.log file -

I also tried giving just the previous restart file in rpointer file but got the same error.
Thanks in advance,

It seems that you are missing the restart file for mosart. The restart files needs to be in your run directory. Please check they all the restart files are there.

when I run a continue for FHIST compset I got error like this...I checked case.mosart.rh0.1979-01-03-00000.nc manually in run directory and I checked the file using ncdump command its not corrupted... The error is follow........
