About optical depth and single scattering albedo

In CCSM3 output files, the optical depth (OD) and single scattering albedo (SSA) are written out at single level. I was wondering what this single level represents. If this single level represents the total vertical column, then how the OD and SSA are calculated from the multi levels to this single level.

Thanks,
Yongxin
