Adding temperature perturbation to CAM dynamical core within a specific lat-lon area

Hi all,  I am trying to run idealized simulations of tropospheric heating over a region in South America using the Eulerian pseudo-spectral dynamical core. My runs are set up in the Held-Suarez configuration.  I'm trying to branch my run from a spin up case I did previously and add a perturbation to the temperature field within a specific lat-lon area. However, I can't quite figure out how to do this. I tried editing the main restart file from the spin up run (which I understand the branch run should be reading from to initialize the run), but I'm unsure if that worked. If anyone could provide insight on this, it would be much appreciated.  Thanks in advance, Carolina

Hi Carolina,Just want to make sure I understand what you want to do.  It sounds like you want to impose an additional temperature tendency on top of the Held-Suarez relaxation?  Do you want this temperature tendency to persist throughout your simulation?  Just changing the temperatures in the initial condition file won't do that for you.  The Held-Suarez relaxation will quickly wipe out the temperature anomaly you've put in.  If I understand correctly what you want to do, then a more appropritate thing to do would be to add an additional temperature tendency onto the tendency already provided by the Held-Suarez relaxation.  This could either be done using an analytical profile for your additional tendency or you could read the additional tendency in from a file.  If you provide some more details of exactly what you want to do then I can add it as an example to the simpler models web pages. Thanks,Isla

Hi Carolina,I have added an additional page to the simpler models website that contains source code modifications and instructions for how to apply an additional temperature tendency, read in from a netcdf file, to the dry dynamical core here...http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/simpler-models/qpertread.htmlPlease let me know if you have any issues following these. Thanks,Isla
