Annual mean insolation / zenith angle question (for an aqua planet experiment)

Dear Forum, I am currently trying to set up an aqua planet simulation with a thermodynamic slab ocean. I am interested in removing the annual cycle in insolation. My first approach was to choose an equinox configuration (by setting all orbital parameters to zero), however this results (as expected) in extreme high latitude cooling and a much too strong equator-pole temperature gradient. I am aware that other AGCMs have an option to prescribe a time constant annual mean solar insolation in the radiation code to avoid the temperature gradient problem. Has anyone done this in CAM? Any hints or solutions on how to prescribe an annual mean insolation in the CAM radiation code are highly appreciated.
