branch run with reference case created on different machine?

I am trying to continue a CESM (CCSM4) run on Cheyenne that I start on Yellowstone.  When I try this on Cheyenne as a "branch" run, it fails while it is reading the first restart file with the error "NetCDF: Attribute not found". When I try this on Cheyenne as a "hybrid" run instead, it works successfully. Does the "branch" run type require that the reference case was generated on the same machine as where the branch run is being carried out? Or is it possible that with a bit more debugging I could get this continuation run to work as a "branch" run? It seems that "branch" may be preferable to "hybrid" in this case, but perhaps it doesn't matter since the continuation on Cheyenne presumably won't be bit-for-bit identical to what it would have been if it were run on Yellowstone anyway.
