calculating continuity eqn w/ cam output

I have some daily averaged output from cam on hybrid surfaces and as a
start to a more involved calculation, I'd like to solve the continuity equation.

My first attempts haven't worked well and resulted in large errors near
the surface. I'm using a canned routine to calculate the du/dx + dv/dy and
this is done in spectral space. These results look OK. The problems
seem to be with my vertical terms.

I looked at the CAM documentation and couldn't sort out how to proceed. I
looked through the code and couldn't find where the calculation is done. If
someone could point me to an example, I'd appreciate the help.

I found the CAM documentation I was looking for that describes describes
the calculation. I had confused the sigma coordinate formulation
with hybrid-sigma coordinate formuation.
