CAM4/CAM5 standalone with slab-ocean model (SOM)

Is anyone here running CAM4 or CAM5 in standalone mode with a slab-ocean model? I understand that beginning with CAM4, this method is no longer officially supported. As far as I can tell, the only supported way to run a slab-ocean model coupled to CAM is to use CESM with compset E.

If possible, I wish to avoid using all of the machinery of CESM, and run CAM4 with the old slab-ocean method of CAM3. In that method, one would perform a forced SST run and find the Q-flux from the net surface flux and the SST tendency, then perform a slab-ocean run using the stored Q-fluxes.
While this doesn't produce great behavior in regions of sea ice, I am primarily interested in the tropics and subtropics and wish to avoid running a fully coupled simulation to obtain Q-fluxes.

Has anyone had any success running CAM4 in standalone mode with a slab-ocean? If so, could you let me know how you did it?

Thanks in advance,
John
