CAM5: Slab ocean model input variable Mixed layer depth

Hi,

I am using E1850C5CN.
I was wondering if someone can help me in understanding the slab ocean model formulation. The main thing to ask is that how does the monthly Q-flux is estimated in SOM in E1850C5CN (in the model input file pop_frc.1x1d.090130.nc it is stored in 'qdb' variable).

The description is not given in the CAM5 description file, however, it is there in the CAM4 description file, and so I was following CAM4 description. But in CAM4 description the mixed layer depth 'ho' is the annual mean value.

The important thing to note is that, in the input file for SOM i.e. /ocn/docn7/SOM/pop_frc.1x1d.090130.nc there is no variable called mixed layer depth but boundary layer depth 'hblt' which is also monthly varying unlike 'ho'.

I am confused. What will be the best way to understand the formulation of of CAM5 SOM?

Thanks
Angshuman
