Can I modify the file "topography_20040323.ieeei4"

Hi
everyone
I try to modify the file"topography_20040323.ieeei4" and "region_mask_20040220.ieeei4"(inputdata/ocn/pop/gx3v5/grid).
I also modify the files "global_gx3v5.kmt".(inputdata/ocn/pop/gx3v5/grid)
I want to change some ocean become to land.When I run CCSM3 with the modified files,these is a mistake :

if you want to make some ocean into land the changes of topography should also be done in atm/land boundary datasets. and i guess changes must be consistent for coupler to exchange fluxes.
