Can we run a simulation with the BSSP585 compset using CESM2.2?

Hi all,

I would like to run a simulation with the BSSP585 compset using CESM2.2. I noticed that this compset exists in CESM2.1.2 but has not been defined in CESM2.2. But I can still create a case (named SSP585_cesm2.2) with the long name 'SSP585_CAM60_CLM50%BGC-CROP_CICE_POP2%ECO%ABIO-DIC_MOSART_CISM2%NOEVOLVE_WW3_BGC%BDRD' using cesm2.2.

To make sure everything is set correctly, I created another case with the BSSP585 compset using cesm2.1.2 for reference, named SSP585_cesm2.1.2. When I compare the two cases, I found that they have some different configurations. For example, the CAM_NML_USER_CASE is ssp585_cam6 in SSP585_cesm2.1.2 but is UNSET in SSP585_cesm2.2. The input files listed in the Buildconf/cam.input_data_list are also different. For instance,

In Case SSP585_cesm2.2: srf_emis_specifier for bc_a4 = /glade/p/cesmdata/cseg/inputdata/atm/cam/chem/emis/CMIP6_emissions_1750_2015/emissions-cmip6_bc_a4_anthro_surface_1750-2015_0.9x1.25_c20170608.nc
In Case SSP585_cesm2.1.2: srf_emis_specifier for bc_a4 = /glade/p/cesmdata/cseg/inputdata/atm/cam/chem/emis/emissions_ssp585/emissions-cmip6-ScenarioMIP_IAMC-REMIND-MAGPIE-ssp585-1-1_bc_a4_bb_surface_mol_175001-210101_0.9x1.25_c20190224.nc

It seems that the first file is not for future scenarios, and the default setups of my Case SSP585_cesm2.2 are not completely correct.

I am wondering is it possible to run the BSSP585 compset in CESM2.2? When will the BSSP585 compset be available in CESM2.2? I prefer using CESM2.2 because I made some code changes based on CESM2.2. If I can use the BSSP585 compset in CESM2.2 now, what needs to be changed manually after I create the case with the long name?

Hi,

CESM2.2 isn't intended for scientific runs. So I'm sorry to tell you that the BSSP585 compset will never be in CESM2.2.
You can eventually get the configurations between CESM2.1.2 and CESM2.2 to match. But, the model code has changed
and there's no guarantee on the results.

I am also running BSSP585 in CESM2.1.3 and I set the resolution to f19_g16, but I found the inputdata ' emissions-cmip6_CO2_anthro_surface_ScenarioMIP_IAMC-REMIND-MAGPIE-ssp585_201401-210112_fv_1.9x2.5_c20190207.nc' is missing on the download site. There is only similar file for 0.9x1.25. Did you meet this problem when you run BSSP585? How can I resove the problem?

Hi, I can run the BSSP585 compset in CESM 2.1.3 with res f09_g17 with no problem. As you mentioned, the 0.9x1.25 emission data is available (at /glade/p/cesmdata/cseg/inputdata/atm/cam/chem/emis/emissions_ssp585/emissions-cmip6-ScenarioMIP_IAMC-REMIND-MAGPIE-ssp585-1-1_num_pom_a4_anthro_surface_mol_175001-210101_0.9x1.25_c20190224.nc). I did not find any emission files in 1.9x2.5 resolution, either. I think you can solve this by using a standard 0.9x1.25 resolution or generating the emission files in 1.9x2.5 resolution by yourself. Hope this helps!
