Choice of compset for running with observed, historical SSTs from the year 2000 to the year 2022

Hello everyone,

I want to run CESM 2.1.3 with observed, historical monthly SSTs from the year 2000 to the year 2022. I can set up an “FHIST” compset run from the year 2000 to the year 2014. However, there are different SSP scenarios running from 2015 to 2022. Which SSP should I use? I did find an aliased F compset for SSP scenarios on this page: CESM2 Component Sets Definition (CESM2 Component Sets Definition). How do I choose an compset for a historical run stating from 2015 to 2022?

Thank you for your time,
Andy

Andy,
I don't think there's a right answer. All the SSPs are similar in those first few years, so it probably won't make much difference which one you use. The GHG forcing and aerosol emissions will deviate from reality, but I'm not sure whether the differences among the SSP forcings are big enough to be distinguishable from one another.

We are hoping to have updated forcing data to be able to extend FHIST beyond 2014, but I don't know what the timeline is to get that.
