CICE initialization error using a customized grid

Hi.

I am running a coupled model with CICE5 using a customized ocn/ice grid on Derecho in tag cesm2_3_alpha17a. It has an initialization error related to mesh files. After adding the new grid to $CESMROOT/ccs_config/component_grids_*.xml, $CESMROOT/ccs_config/modelgrid_aliases_*.xml and maps_mct.xml, the simulation seems to stop at ESMF mesh create section pointing to ice_comp_nuopc.F90:684 (ESMF_LogFile attached).

Unfortunately we are not supporting CICE5 with the nuopc cap anymore. Are you sure it is CICE5 and not CICE6?

I double checked the output of ./describe_version and it says:
./components/cice/src
clean sandbox, on cice6_4_1_20230707
HEAD detached at cice6_4_1_20230707
nothing to commit, working tree clean

Since it previously ran well in tag cesm2_3_beta06 corresponding to cice5_20200430, I am wondering if there is any extra setting required in CICE6 for customized grid. Any help or comment is appreciated!

Yes, CICE6 allows for dynamic variable allocation and the grid dimension are read in from the namelist. Have a look here for the most up to date documentation:
