climate mismatch between POP2 and slab runs

I'm running two control runs with CESM1.2.1 with CAM4 physics. One is a fully coupled case. The other one is run with the slab ocean model and q-flux computed from the dfully oupled control. The climatology of the slab control does not agree that of the coupled run, mainly over the high latitudes due to reduced sea ice extent. I would welcome any advise on  the best way to diagnose the cause of the discrepancy between the two climates.
