CLM installation

Hi everyone,

I'm new to working with land surface models and I'm looking to install and run the Community Land Model (CLM) on my local machine (16-core Ubuntu 24.04 system).
I'm currently deciding between CESM and CTSM as the framework to run CLM. I’d appreciate any advice on which one would be more suitable for local runs.

Additionally, I want to ensure my environment is set up correctly. Could anyone share the compatible or recommended versions of the following libraries for running CLM 5 or CLM 6?
  • ZLIB
  • HDF5
  • NetCDF-C
  • NetCDF-Fortran
  • Parallel NetCDF (PnetCDF)
  • LAPACK and BLAS

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This post seems more appropriate in the Porting forum.

My only contribution for now is this: If you expect to run CTSM only, i.e. not coupled to CAM (and/or other components), then I would go with CTSM and not CESM.

hdf5 1.12.3
netcdf-c 4.9.3
netcdf-fortran 4.6.2
parallel netcdf 1.14.0

ctsm vs cesm doesn't really matter, but as Sam says if you only intend to run clm then use ctsm.
