CLM45 CN fire amount

Dear All:
Happy Holidays!
I set a control run for study the wildfire burned amount in CLM45 at Cheyenne.
the setting is -res f09_g16 -user_compset 2000_CAM5_CLM45%BGC_CICE%PRES_DOCN%DOM_RTM_SGLC_SWAV
The configuration is the CLM45 BGC -CN run with CAM5.4-MAM4 option without other changes. We let the model run 17 years free run begin with 2000 climatology. The land model total fire burned area is around 850 Mh per year compared to 330 Mh per year for GFED4. The spatial pattern is reasonable. But I remember the CLM-fire tends to underestimate the wildfire amount, is that right? I am not sure this 850 Mh is reasonable or not?
Thank you very much! You all have a blessing holiday!

Fire amount was certainly underestimated in CLM4 compared to GFED4S. In CLM4.5, fire amount increased, although was still low compared to GFED4S. There are some further improvements in CLM5.

There is a comparison of fire diagnostics (from ILAMB) for CLM4, CLM4.5, CLM5 when forced by pseudo-observations (GSWP3) here:

And for the coupled model (LENS, which used CLM4, and CESM2.1, which used CLM5) here:

So the large overestimate of burned area in your simulation does seem to be inconsistent with these results.

hello ,could you please tell me how to calculate the burned area ,i don't know how to calculate it from the simulation results,hope to recieve your reply,thank you

Area_burned = FAREA_BURNED (s-1) x area (km2)
CLM history file has both 'FAREA_BURNED' and 'area'

Hope this helps.
Thanks!

Thank you very much, but i have a question, whether the 'area' means the resolution gridcell,which means when i simulate the resolution of 0.1*0.1,and Area_burned = FAREA_BURNED (s-1) x area (km2) ,area ≈10*10km2
