Configuring CAM5 with 'mg2' cloud microphysics option, in fully coupled cesm1_3_beta07 simulation

Hi there,

I would like to configure cam (within a fully-coupled BG simulation) to use version 2 of the CAM5 microphysics package (mg2).

I have found a namelist variable "micro_mg_version". Is setting this to two, i.e.:

echo micro_mg_version=2 > user_nl_cam

sufficient to turn on mg2? Or do I need to add a statement to, e.g., CAM_CONFIG_OPTS, in env_build.xml?

Thanks for your help!

MG2 is not yet available in CESM. I'm making some final adjustments this week, and then it will be on the CAM trunk, so it will finally be added in one of the next couple of CESM betas. Once it is available, it will be possible to enable MG2 by adding "-microphys mg2" to CAM_CONFIG_OPTS.

Great thanks.

For future reference what does the existing micro_mg_version namelist variable control, if not the CAM microphysics version?

Perhaps it controls nothing, as was just implemented in prep for your upcoming work?

Thanks again,

Jeremy

micro_mg_version and micro_mg_sub_version were primarily implemented as prep work, yes. There is also an MG 1.5 that can be turned on with this method, which has some of the early refactoring work that was done for MG2. However, it is just an incomplete development version, which is missing most of the new functionality of MG2 (especially prognostic precipitation).

Hi Sean,Thanks for the information.  Is there any chance you could ping me (fyke@lanl.gov) when this is added to the CAM trunk and is available for fully coupled CESM runs?  I'd be happy to be a guinea pig :) Thanks Jeremy Fyke
