Confused about hybrid and branch?

I plan to design a set of experiments using the B1850_CAM5_CN compset in CESM1.2.2. I got this spun-up restart file b.e11.B1850C5CN.f09_g16.005.rest.0501-01-01-00000.tar from the Globus endpoint. The experiment design is as follows:
1. Experiment 1: Restart the model from the above restart file and run it for 250 years;
2. Experiment 2: Restart the model from the above restart file, modify the source code for calculating the heat flux at the sea surface, and run it for 250 years.

My question is:
1. Should I use branch or hybrid for the above two experiments?
2. The resolution of the restart file is f09_g16, if I want to run the experiments as f19_g16, how should I implement it?

CESM 1.2.2 is my first choice, but I can also use CESM 2.1.3 if CESM 1.2.2 is not supported.

Looking forward to get any useful information.

Best regards,
KW

1. Since this is a new suite of simulations, use hybrid. You could have used branch if you had generated the above restart file with your own simulation and wanted to continue that simulation with some small modification, e.g. in the history output.
2. The land model can handle a restart file from a different resolution, but I forget whether other components can do so. Can anyone else offer feedback on this?
