Definition of UVEL and VVEL in POP

I want to know what coordinate system UVEL and VVEL follow.

According to the documentation, the definition of UVEL and VVEL
UVEL
cm/s
Zonal Velocity
VVEL
cm/s
Meridional Velocity

But the definition of UVEL2 and VVEL2
UVEL2
cm2/s2
Velocity in grid-x direction
VVEL2
cm2/s2
Velocity in grid-y direction

Because POP2 use displaced-pole grid, grid-x and grid-y directions are equivalent to eastward and northward directions.
So, are they actually using a different coordinate system? Or I am mistaking something?

Typo: grid-x and grid-y directions are NOT equivalent to eastward and northward directions.
