Difference between CESM2 and CESM2-FV

Hi all,

I've been looking at CMIP6 data a lot recently, and there are four versions of CESM2 on the archive:

CESM2
CESM2-FV
CESM2-WACCM
CESM2-WACCM-FV

I understand the difference between CESM2 and CESM2-WACCM. But what's the difference between CESM2 and CESM2-FV? I'm assuming FV is finite volume, but in that case, is the regular CESM2 spectral element? And which grid, more specifically, are they using for both?

I haven't been able to find this information online so far, so I'm wondering anyone in this forum can help me out.

Hi Ulla,

I think the four versions available are actually CESM2, CESM2-FV2, CESM2-WACCM and CESM2-WACCM-FV2 (i.e., with a 2 after the FV's). They are all using the finite volume dynamical core but CESM2 and CESM2-WACCM have approximately 1 degree resolution while CESM2-FV2 and CESM2-WACCM-FV2 have approximately 2 degree resolution.

As Isla notes, the "FV" part is actually "FV2", and that denotes finite volume with a resolution of about 2 degrees. The lack of "FV2" means the default 1 degree resolution.
