Difference between restart run and using the generated initial condition

Hi all:I'm doing idealized simulations to investigate the atmospheric response to changes in the prescribed SST from June to November. I did a 5-month spin-up run from 1 Jan to June 1, and I output the initial conditions during the simulation every month. Therefore, I got many restart files and an initial condition for CAM on 1 June. Then I changed the prescribed SST during Jun - November in env_run.xml. I did two kinds of runs from 1 June to 1 November.Run 1: Do a startup run. Using the initial condition on 1 June and change RUN_STARTDATE and RUN_REFDATE to 0001-06-01. Integrate the CESM for 6 months.Run 2: Do a branch run. Using the restart files on 1 June and change RUN_REFCASE to the case that I did previously and change RUN_REFDATE to 0001-06-01. Integrate the CESM for 6 months.I'm new to CESM, and I'm not sure what's the difference between those two 6-month runs. Can anyone explain to me and give me some suggestion about which run is better for my purpose?   Jay
