I had some questions in running CESM2.1.3. I am running CESM with compost BSSP585cmip6 from 2015-01-01-00000, but there is not the b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.010_v2.cam.r.2015-01-01-00000.nc in restart files. The file I have is b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.010_v2.cam.i.2015-01-01-00000.nc. Can someone provide me with cam.r. file? Or is there something I need to fix to solve this problem?

You cannot do a branch run when going from BHIST to BSSP. You'll need to do a runtype = 'hybrid' and then the initial (i) file is what you want.

But what if I really need to perform a branch run using BHIST restart files? According to the user guide, "Branch runs are typically used when sensitivity or parameter studies are required, or when settings for history file output streams need to be modified while still maintaining bit-for-bit reproducibility." Could you please explain the reason why branch run from BHIST to BSSP is forbidden. Thanks a lot!

A branch is identical to a restart, except that the branch will allow you to modify things like history settings or parameter values. A hybrid is more flexible and allows you to change compsets such as BHIST to BSSP.
