Errors about changing topography in WACCM

Hi  I want to change the topography in WACCM (eg. Reduce the height of mountains). I made changes to PHIS, SGH, SGH30 in the topo file. Howerer, it always died out within a few minutes.  PS, I use CESM 1.0.4, case compset: FW, res: f19_f19 Error message in the log file is:*******************************************Opened file origin.cam2.h1.1979-01-01-00000.nc to write         125 Opened file origin.cam2.h2.1979-01-01-00000.nc to write         126 Opened file origin.cam2.h3.1979-01-01-00000.nc to write         127 Opened file origin.cam2.h4.1979-01-01-00000.nc to write         128  filew failed, worst i, j, qtmp, q =            1           4 -1.501219885893109E-252  2.064539803665195E-267  filew failed, worst i, j, qtmp, q =            1          55 -5.603381093681555E-166  1.499971372258972E-224  filew failed, worst i, j, qtmp, q =            1          55 -1.104077389905825E-162  6.833000159141414E-226  filew failed, worst i, j, qtmp, q =            1          84 -6.501329917614364E-035  9.858784748701748E-037 QNEG3 from TPHYSBCb:m=  4 lat/lchnk=  904 Min. mixing ratio violated at    1 points.  Reset to  1.0E-12 Worst =-2.2E-11 at i,k=   4  1  filew failed, worst i, j, qtmp, q =            1          57 -2.898403113253403E-181  1.019470732001682E-233  filew failed, worst i, j, qtmp, q =            1          55 -1.027621033154234E-183  6.559284865460349E-227forrtl: severe (174): SIGSEGV, segmentation fault occurredImage              PC                Routine            Line        Source             ccsm.exe           0000000000B50B5C  tp_core_mp_xtpv_          468  tp_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000B5B273  tp_core_mp_tp2c_          119  tp_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000B44852  sw_core_mp_c_sw_          309  sw_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000A865F9  cd_core_                  732  cd_core.F90ccsm.exe           00000000007A399C  dyn_comp_mp_dyn_r        1820  dyn_comp.F90ccsm.exe           00000000005CA842  stepon_mp_stepon_         420  stepon.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000471000  cam_comp_mp_cam_r         225  cam_comp.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000465C70  atm_comp_mct_mp_a         549  atm_comp_mct.F90ccsm.exe           00000000004085C6  ccsm_comp_mod_mp_        2166  ccsm_comp_mod.F90ccsm.exe           000000000041699D  MAIN__                     91  ccsm_driver.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000405EDC  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownlibc.so.6          000000310C01ECDD  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownccsm.exe           0000000000405D69  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownforrtl: severe (174): SIGSEGV, segmentation fault occurredImage              PC                Routine            Line        Source             ccsm.exe           0000000000B50B5C  tp_core_mp_xtpv_          468  tp_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000B5B273  tp_core_mp_tp2c_          119  tp_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000B44852  sw_core_mp_c_sw_          309  sw_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000A865F9  cd_core_                  732  cd_core.F90ccsm.exe           00000000007A399C  dyn_comp_mp_dyn_r        1820  dyn_comp.F90ccsm.exe           00000000005CA842  stepon_mp_stepon_         420  stepon.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000471000  cam_comp_mp_cam_r         225  cam_comp.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000465C70  atm_comp_mct_mp_a         549  atm_comp_mct.F90ccsm.exe           00000000004085C6  ccsm_comp_mod_mp_        2166  ccsm_comp_mod.F90ccsm.exe           000000000041699D  MAIN__                     91  ccsm_driver.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000405EDC  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownlibc.so.6          000000310C01ECDD  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownccsm.exe           0000000000405D69  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownforrtl: severe (174): SIGSEGV, segmentation fault occurredImage              PC                Routine            Line        Source             ccsm.exe           0000000000B50B5C  tp_core_mp_xtpv_          468  tp_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000B5B273  tp_core_mp_tp2c_          119  tp_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000B44852  sw_core_mp_c_sw_          309  sw_core.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000A865F9  cd_core_                  732  cd_core.F90ccsm.exe           00000000007A399C  dyn_comp_mp_dyn_r        1820  dyn_comp.F90ccsm.exe           00000000005CA842  stepon_mp_stepon_         420  stepon.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000471000  cam_comp_mp_cam_r         225  cam_comp.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000465C70  atm_comp_mct_mp_a         549  atm_comp_mct.F90ccsm.exe           00000000004085C6  ccsm_comp_mod_mp_        2166  ccsm_comp_mod.F90ccsm.exe           000000000041699D  MAIN__                     91  ccsm_driver.F90ccsm.exe           0000000000405EDC  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownlibc.so.6          000000310C01ECDD  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownccsm.exe           0000000000405D69  Unknown               Unknown  Unknownrank 26 in job 1  c0109.cm.cluster_40240   caused collective abort of all ranks  exit status of rank 26: killed by signal 9 How do i solve this error? This is an indication of a CFL condition.   My guess is that your change in the topography created a large inbalance in the atmospheric initial condition and the model is trying to compensate.   One possible solution is to set the timestep very small and run for a few days, then write a new initial condition file and start from that with the default timestep.  You should also consider updating to a newer version of the model.   1.0.4 is quite out of date

As Jim Edwards says, it's likely that some spinup is needed. Note also that the CAM topography files are typically smoothed as described here:http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/cms/pel/papers/LBCT2015GMD.pdfUnsmoothed data is likely to cause the model to be less stable, though maybe that is less of a concern if you are simply reducing heights in a file that has already been smoothed. It depends on what exactly you are doing?
