fail to simulate the ENSO using historical run

Hello, everyone,
I have conducted a historical simulation using FHIST. The simulation time is from 1850 to 2005. The ENSO index is compared between my CESM simulation and observation SST data. However, the results is very bad. The correlation coefficent of the ENSO index between my CESM simulation and observation SST data is just -0.2, which is too low for the simulation. I don't understand what's wrong with that. Is this because the spin up time is not enough or something else?
I'm looking forward to your reply.

The model does simulate an ENSO. It is just not in phase with the observed ENSO, which is to be expected in a fully couple configuration (BHIST).
