Hi,

I am checking the rawdata files used for the mksrf_fch4 and mksrf_furban when making the surface dataset.

The default setting for mksrf_fch4 is the one created on 2013, Feb 22, i.e. c130222.nc. Two files are under /glade/p/cesm/cseg/inputdata/lnd/clm2/rawdata
mksrf_ch4inversion_0.5x0.5_cruncep_simyr2000.c191112.nc
mksrf_ch4inversion_360x720_cruncep_simyr2000.c130322.nc

The default setting for mksrf_furban is .c12062.nc. I find these two files under /glade/p/cesm/cseg/inputdata/lnd/clm2/rawdata
mksrf_urban_0.05x0.05_simyr2000.c120621.nc
mksrf_urban_0.05x0.05_zerourbanpct.c181014.nc

The print-out resulting from ncdump -h shows no difference between the files in each case. Could you explain the difference between the two files in each case ?

Sincerely,

I think the zerourbanpct dataset was created for a "no-anthro" (no anthropogenic forcings) compset to be used for, e.g., paleo applications. So you can create a surface dataset that has no urban area.
I believe the newer ch4inversion file was created as part of some work to re-work the mksurfdata tools. This hasn't been implemented yet.

Thanks, Keith.

What do you mean by "The newer ch4inversion file hasn't been implemented yet" ? I do not know which one to choose among the two ch4inversion files.

Another one question is about the urban dataset. Sorry, I posted the wrong file. The two files are
mksrf_urban_0.05x0.05_simyr2000.c120621.nc
mksrf_urban_0.05x0.05_simyr2000.c170724.nc

The default is the first one. And also I do not know which one choose to use.

Sincerely,

Use the default one: mksrf_ch4inversion_360x720_cruncep_simyr2000.c130322.nc
The other file hasn't been incorporated into mksurfdata_map and CTSM code yet.

This file: mksrf_urban_0.05x0.05_simyr2000.c170724.nc is an updated urban dataset as described in Oleson and Feddema, JAMES, 2019.
If you used it you would also have to change the mksurfdata_map code and then the CTSM code to use the surface dataset that was created from it. So I would use the other file unless your research focus was urban simulation. These changes are scheduled for a CTSM tag in the hopefully near-future.
