How does the "prescribed mode" of sulfur work?

Dear all,
I have some questions of the sulfate aerosol data of CAM3.
Can SOx data be in the format of changing time dimension when at the "prescribed" mode? Besides, How is sulfur data used in the "prescribed" mode?
I have looked up into the source code for a whole day, but found nothing. I would be very grateful for anybody's guide on these quesitons.
