How is POP bathymetry determined from actual bathymetry?

Hi all,

I am trying to find the documentation or the code for how the POP topography file is created from observed bathymetry. I cannot find this information in the 2010 POP reference manual by Ron Smith (though a clear description of how roughness is determined from ETOPO2 is present). Can someone point me to the documentation or the actual code used to create a POP topography file (i.e., topography_20161215.ieeei4). Thanks for your help!

All the best,
Liz

Hi all,

I've found my answer, so I'm going to post it here for anyone else who is asking this in the future. POP topography is created from ETOPO2. The mean depth of ETOPO2 in each POP cell is calculated, and then that mean depth (htmean) is used to determine KMT.

All the best,
Liz
