How is shortwave penetration handled in slab and coupled models?

I am a grad student working with CEMS LENS pre-industrial control simulations for the slab ocean model (SOM) and fully coupled model (FCM) for my dissertation. I am wondering how the shortwave penetration is handled in both the FCM and SOM-- do these two models use the same equation? What is the equation used? Also, is all the shortwave in the SOM confined to the ocean layer? I assume so since otherwise this heat would be lost to the system.
