How to calculate the residual of zonal mean in POP grid

Hi There!

I would like to conduct decomposition on the POP variables into two parts -- the zonal mean and the residual.
For example, V = [V] + V*. where V is a variable with POP grid, [V] is the zonal mean, and V* is the residual.
I used the fortran script from Dr. Lindsay to create the zonal mean. However, I don't know how to calculate the residual V* because the grid is irregular and there is not a constant latitude associated with each row of the data.
Does any one have any ideas? Thanks very much in advance!!!

Cheers,
Qinxue
