How to generate LAI for each PFT following MODIS-PFT LAI (MODISPFTLAI) for a longer period using GLASS total LAI?

Dear CLM community,

I’m working on generating LAI forcing data for my regional CLM5 simulation. I would like to create LAI for each plant functional type (PFT) consistent with the MODIS PFT LAI (MODISPFTLAI) dataset. However, the MODISPFTLAI product only provides data from 2001 to 2013, while my study period is 1985–2015 (31 years).

I have the GLASS total LAI dataset covering the full period, and my idea is to use the PFT distribution and LAI fractions from MODISPFTLAI (during the overlapping period) to estimate the LAI for each PFT across all years.

My questions are:

  1. What is the recommended approach to generate per-PFT LAI time series beyond the MODISPFTLAI period?​
  2. Is there any existing tool or script in CLM or CESM pre-processing utilities that can help distribute total LAI (e.g., GLASS) into PFT-level LAI following MODISPFTLAI weighting?​
  3. Are there any best practices or references for deriving PFT-based LAI forcing data consistent with CLM surface datasets?​

I’m sorry if this sounds like a simple question that might already be described in the literature, but I would like to make sure I understand the exact method used to create the official dataset:
MODISPFTLAI_0.5x0.5_c140711.nc.

Any suggestions, example workflows, or references would be greatly appreciated.
