How to make sure underground water supply to plants in CLM?

Dear all:
I am using CTSM5.1-dev130 to run a single-point simulation in a desert environment. In the desert, plants rely heavily on underground water, but even after setting the soil depth to 10 meters, the soil is too dry, and all the plants die. How can I ensure that plants can access underground water in such conditions? Are there any available solutions for this?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

and these are the model versions:

You say that "the soil is too dry" so you may wish to experiment with the soil texture at the site of your simulation. If other soil textures still fail to retain the correct amount of moisture, you may also want to tweak the model's soil parameters and/or hydrology algorithm. These are some initial ideas, and you may come up with follow-up ideas to try if these do not seem to help.
