how to produce mapfiles

Hello everyone:I want to couple other component models into cesm. It seems mapfiles are very important for the success of coupling, however, I do not know how to generate effective mapfiles. Does anyone know how to do it ? Thank very much. In addition, could you expain variables in mapfiles for me? Thanks.
