How to set a sponge layer between Troposphere and Stratosphere

I'm trying to set a sponge layer between Troposphere and Stratosphere in CESM 1.2.0 in order to dampen upward propagation of planetary wave through Troposphere into Sratosphere but failed. So I'm wondering if you can offer me a hand on this. Any suggestions or help you could offer would be great.
