How to use real data (reanalysis) as input data to the CESM2?

Dear Colleagues,

I am trying to use real data such as ERA5 or NCAR/NCEP Reanalysis as input data to the CESM2, especially for CAM and OCN modules. But I have little idea of what to do in the beginning. Could you please provide any clue for me to get an idea to figure out my issue? Thanks a lot in advance.

It's going to depend a lot on the specifics of what you are trying to do. And both CAM and POP will probably have very different answers to your question. I suggest writing a post in the CAM bulletin board here: CAM and another one in the ocean bulletin board here: POP with the specifics of what you are trying to accomplish. Especially if you are using this data as a reference starting point, or as nudging data or if you are interested in data assimilation, etc.

Thank you for your comment. I want to use reanalysis as a reference initial data so that the CESM can be used as if it were an operational weather forecast model. The reason I have this idea is because MPAS-Atmosphere is a state-of-the-art global model but does not yet have any coupler with other components. Instead of developing a coupler for the MPAS model components by myself, I am going to use the CESM to investigate the weather predictability at subseasonal time scales. My current problem is how to create the initial conditions to feed into the CESM. Specifically, I need to know more about how to interpolate reanalysis into the spatial coordinates of the CESM2. It might be possible to use a regridder from xESMF in the horizontal direction, but I have no idea of the vertical interpolation. Please share your ideas or suggestions for this issue. Thank you.
