In cesm1_1_1 : NetCDF: Attribute not found - What exactly ??

In cesm1_1_1 I get this generic error:

pio_support::pio_die:: myrank= -1 : ERROR: pionfatt_mod.F90:
1167 : NetCDF: Attribute not found

I change this to 6 from 0;

but it does not help.

What is the name of the attribute that is not found?
Any idea how I could modify the code so that I know the name it's looking for?
