necessity of cold start

Hello,I am new to CESM CLM modeling framework, so pardon me if this question sounds a bit trivial.I am trying to spin-up CLM4.5 and the examples in CLM tutorial set talks about setting the "COLD_START" as "ON".Using the COLD_START setting essentially means initializing the system with arbitrary initial condition.My question is... is it necessary to use cold start for spin up or I can use any user defined intial condition file also, and does this make any difference.
