offline CLM3.0 atmospheric forcing question

I am trying to build up atmospheric forcing myself to run CLM3.0. The easiest way seems to write the data in a format similar to NCEP ones. But I am not sure whether the forcing data has to be 3 hour interval also or it can be something else, say 6 hour interval. CLM3.0 will automatically detect the time interval and interpolate to the specified land surface time interval (e.g., 1800s or 3600s).
