I have got this error while using ERA5BC (Era5 Bias corrected) as my own atmospheric forcing. The data came with lon, lat and time but I have gone ahead to make it look like the other forcings (GSWP and CruNCEP) by adding LONGXY and LATIXY and output it as NetCDF 3 Classic. The above named error is found in the cesm log file. The cpl log file points to the datm but the datm does not have an error message. Any assistance will be appreciated.
Please find log files and file header attached.

Does the variable name in your netcdf solar file (SWdown) match the variable name you have specified in your streams file (user_datm.streams.txt.CLMGSWP3v1.Solar)?

Now solved!!! Thanks Oleson for your response. A colleague just hinted that the netcdf and model variable pair within the stream.txt files as shown in Example 5.8 of http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.2/clm/models/lnd/clm/doc/UsersGuide/x12979.html should be in reverse. For example, instead of having....
<variableNames>
PRECTmms PREC
</variableNames>

as shown in Example 5.8 in the above link, it should be
<variableNames>
PREC PRECTmms
</variableNames>
I have effected it and it has worked.
Thanks once again.
