Query on SP - CAM/CESM modelling

Dear all,
I, Dr. Abhishek Lodh, recently have started CESM modelling at Lund University in Sweden under the mentorship of Dr. Phillips. My area of research is cloud modelling. I have few queries in installing and running the CESM model on my workstation:
1) Firstly I want to know the complete steps to run a test case over the global domain (probably an aqua planet case).
2) Steps to run a 2D SP (super parameterization) - CAM case over the global domain.
3) Steps to run a 3D SP (super parameterization) - CAM case over the global domain.
Attached is a screenshot of a relevant SP-CAM publication (KHAIROUTDINOV et al., 2005).
Thanks and Regards
Abhishek Lodh

Hi,
I could install and run the CESMv2.2 model. The cpmset option i choosed is : 2000_CAM%SPCAMM_CLM50%SP_CICE%PRES_DOCN%DOM_RTM_SGLC_SWAV
The status is as follows :

------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Prestage required restarts into /home/abhishekl/OUTPUT/CESM/scratch/f19_f19_spcam_slnd/run
- Case input data directory (DIN_LOC_ROOT) is /home/abhishekl/OUTPUT/CESM/cesm-inputdata
- Checking for required input datasets in DIN_LOC_ROOT
run command is mpirun -np 8 --prepend-rank /home/abhishekl/OUTPUT/CESM/scratch/f19_f19_spcam_slnd/bld/cesm.exe >> cesm.log.$LID 2>&1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

It will be a real help to know the steps to run a 3D version of the SP (super parameterization)-CAM model over the global domain ???

You are asking detailed information that you'll need to find in the relevant model documentation for CESM and it's components. For example here is the starting point for documentation on the CESM2.1.3 release:

Hi Erik,

I am successfully able to execute the SP-CAM in 2D mode within the CESMv2.2 model. The CAM super-parameterized double moment m2005 SAM micro physics is enabled to run the model (COMPSET used is: FSPCAMM i.e 2000_CAM%SPCAMM_CLM50%SP_CICE%PRES_DOCN%DOM_RTM_SGLC_SWAV)

Now with the same model settings but enabling 3D configuration I am trying to run the 3D SP-CAM (super parameterized) model. The "env_build.xml" file is modified, to ---- "-spcam_nx 32 -spcam_ny 32 -spcam_dx 4000 -spcam_dt 20 -phys spcam_m2005", to introduce the dimensions both in the NS direction. But, I am getting the following error.

[0] calcsize j,iq,jac, lsfrm,lstoo 2 1 2 13 17
[0] calcsize j,iq,jac, lsfrm,lstoo 2 2 1 7 14
[0] calcsize j,iq,jac, lsfrm,lstoo 2 2 2 7 14
[0] calcsize j,iq,jac, lsfrm,lstoo 2 3 1 9 15
[0] calcsize j,iq,jac, lsfrm,lstoo 2 3 2 9 15
[0] calcsize j,iq,jac, lsfrm,lstoo 2 4 1 12 16
[0] calcsize j,iq,jac, lsfrm,lstoo 2 4 2 12 16

This error seems to be due to memory taken during the model run. I will be thankful if you can let me know how to get rid of this error ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi ,
Even after incresing the spatial and temporal resolution the same error is coming:
"-chem trop_mam3 -spcam_nx 32 -spcam_ny 32 -spcam_dx 16000 -spcam_dt 80 -phys spcam_m2005 ""
Any clue in this regard will be helpful.

I'm sorry, but your question has been transfered back to CAM.

In answer to your question 1&2, I refer you to the CAM6 User's Guide: CAM6.3 User's Guide | OpenSky

As I've explained before, the answer to question #3 is that this is a non-supported configuration. We have compsets for the spcam_nx=1, but we do not have ones for other settings. These settings were given to us by the initial CRM developers. I suggest you reach out to the paper's author to get details on how they got their job to run, since obviously it is not a simple as changing spcam_nx to 32. I don't believe they monitor this forum.

Thanks Cheryl for your help. Now, I am able to solve my problem of running the 3D SPCAM by reducing the nx and ny.
