Question on prediddle ice_cov and SST_cpl variables

I had a quick question on the ice_cov and SST_cpl prediddle variables in the ocean datasets. I understand what they are, but was wondering, are they used by cesm at all when running the model? Are they in the file just as a reference before the time interpolation? The other question I had is that I ran bcgen to create a file of ocean data from a previously run B-run. In my output, the prediddle variables were not my original values. My new variables were fine, but the prediddle variables for ice_cov were all 0. I know that there is no support for the bcgen software, but wanted to make sure cesm didn't use these prediddle variables before running my model? Thanks.
