Questions about changing the topography and the surface sensible heat flux into atmosphere

Hi,

Now I use CAM5 in CESM1_0_4 to study the mechanical and thermal forcing of the Tibet Plateau (TP). FV dynamic core is employed.

First, I want to get the mechanical influence of the Tibet Plateau. So I design to shut down the surface topography of TP. The variable PHIS in surface topography file in CESM should be set as zero. But variables SGH and SGH30 in this file, I don’t know their utility in CAM5 model. Should I also set them to zero?

Secondly, I want to set the surface sensible heat flux into the atmosphere to zero over TP region, and the land surface energy budget is not changed. But I don’t know in which Fortran code file contains this term. Please tell me the targeted code file.

Thank you.

They are 2 measures of the sub-grid oroopgraic variance so set them to zero also, they you will just have surface grid resolved drag at sea level. Also a tip. When you begin running you should probably take smaller tiemsteps than the default as the shock to the system using a defulat initial file could crash the model as all the mass that was above the tibetean plateau will now drop to sea level setting up strong gravity waves.

Hi,Thank you for your answer.I'm more curious about the second question. Is there a special variation representing TP sensible heat or just need to change surface sensible heat over TP region. Huan
