Questions about diffusion variables

Q1: Variables about horizontal diffusion (i.e. 'HDIFE_TEMP' and 'HDIFN_TEMP') are not saved in my experiment results. So I want to find alternatives. Then I found these 4 variables in outputs (ISOP_ADV_TEND_TEMP, Redi_TEND_TEMP, RF_TEND_TEMP, SUBM_ADV_TEND_TEMP). Is the sum of these 4 variables same with horizontal diffusion estimated from 'HDIFE_TEMP and 'HDIFN_TEMP'?

Q2: About vertical diffusion, I think the vertical diffusion is estimated by 'DIA_IMPVF_TEMP' and 'KPP_SRC_TMP'. But I found 'HDIFB_TEMP' is also the variable about vertical diffusion. So how to calculate precise vertical diffusion in heat budget? Should I include 'HDIFB_TEMP' when calculating vertical diffusion?

Any suggestions are welcome! (BTW, the version of CESM is 2.1.3, the resolution is f19_g17, compset is B1850)

Hi, I am working on a very similar CESM2/POP upper-ocean heat-budget diagnosis and encountered almost the same issues as you described here. Did you eventually solve them?

For horizontal diffusion, did you finally use ISOP_ADV_TEND_TEMP + Redi_TEND_TEMP + SUBM_ADV_TEND_TEMP instead of HDIFE_TEMP + HDIFN_TEMP (+ HDIFB_TEMP)? Did you include RF_TEND_TEMP?

Also, did you determine whether HDIFB_TEMP should be grouped with horizontal/isopycnal diffusion or with vertical mixing?

For vertical mixing, if KPP_SRC_TEMP was not available in your output, how did you handle it in the final heat budget? Did you neglect it, approximate it, or use another diagnostic instead?

Thanks very much for any help!
