Running BHIST past 01-01-2015 leads to a crash due to missing ozone_stratero file

Hi Folks,

I am running CESM 2.1.3 with BHIST starting in 1850 and past 2015. Everything is fine till January 2015 but then the run crashes because it tries to find

atm/cam/ozone_strataero/ozone_strataero_WACCM_L70_zm5day_18500101-20150103_CMIP6ensAvg_c180924.nc

but this file does not exist.

There seem to be two other reports of the same error that hav been posted with no resolution.

Does this mean that BHIST can only be run till 01-01-2015? or is this a bug in the compset?

Thank you,
Sameer Agarwal

Hi Sameer,

Sadly the standard BHIST configuration only runs to 2015, so the error you are getting is expected. If you want to expand it you'll need to use one of the SSP emission scenarios for ozone. The two I found in the inputdata server are:

ozone_strataero_WACCM_L70_zm5day_2015-2100_SSP126_c190221.nc
ozone_strataero_WACCM_L70_zm5day_2015-2100_SSP585_c190529.nc

So, for example, if you wanted to use the SSP126 version to run your simulation out longer then you simply need to add the following line to user_nl_cam:

prescribed_ozone_file = 'ozone_strataero_WACCM_L70_zm5day_2015-2100_SSP126_c190221.nc'

Please note that it is possible that other forcing files might have date limits as well and thus will need to be changed to an SSP forcing dataset. If this becomes a problem then the simplest solution would likely be to create a new case using one of the SSP compsets that branches off (or is a hybrid of) the current BHIST simulation you have.

Anyways, I hope that helps, and have a great day!

Jesse
