Running Slab Ocean Model, questions...

I am trying to run the slab ocean model with WACCM 3.1.9 on a Mac OS X 10.5. The 'bndtvs' file I am using (sst_HadOIBl_bc_4x5_clim_c030228.nc) already contains variables QFLUX, MLDANN, etc? Do I still need to do a control run for the sst's to behave properly using SOM?

Also, based on the values given, I am assuming the variable TSOCN is in units of degrees celsius despite the fact that the header lists it as in units of meters.
