SNICAR wormhole error with CESM1.2 CLM4.0

I am running CESM1.2.2 in the B1850_CAM5 compset using CLM4.0.
After some months, the model crashes with the following error message

SNICAR ERROR: FOUND A WORMHOLE. STUCK IN INFINITE LOOP!

coming from the SNICARMod.F90 routine.

Maybe someone has an idea what could lead to such an error?
Thank you in advance

I've searched the issues on the CTSM github site and found this:

In that case the error seems to be related to the use of a surface dataset that doesn't have mxsoil_color on it.

Another possibility is that the radiation scheme in CAM is providing some bad values of solar radiation to CLM (e.g., negative) and it's showing up as an error in the SNICAR routine.
