soil moisture capacity

Hello,I am working with your CCSM4 and CESM1_CAM5 CMIP5 simulations and have the following question. I need to evaluate change in soil moisture (mrso) and want to compare it with the total soil moisture capacity (mrsofc). But in both  these models the capacity has values that are in order of 300-400 kg/m2, however the actual soil moisture values for the historical simulations go up to 5000 kg/m2, so I think one of these variables must have the wrong units? I am wondering how can the soil moisture have values so much higher than the actual total capacity of the grid point ?  I would have thought that at least climatologically the capacity should be higher than the soil moisture ?or not? many thanks,Maisa
