Soil Moisture - restart file and modification

Hi, I have been trying to figure out how the soil moisture is written in the restart files. If I need to update the variable after certain time-step, should I be modifying H2OSOI_LIQ and H2OSOI_ICE in the restart files? Also, considering these variables are written as 1-d in the restart files while they are actually 2-d in the output file, how should they be converted from 1-d to 2-d? Thanks,Harsh
