SP Mode Spin up?

Hi all,A very simple science question as I might have understood something wrongly:From my understanding, SP mode (Satellite Phenology) is when the land is fed by satellite data. Does this means that the land information is not coupled, and land properties are read from data to drive other components?If SP mode is used, is a spin-up run necessary? (To stabilize other components?)

Hi AlanSP mode just refers to how the vegetation is modeled in terms of it's seasonal cycle. Mostly refering to the annual cycle of growth over the Summer and dropping leaves in the Fall. What that means is the vegetation leaf area index is based on satellite data climatology. But, outside of that the land information is coupled and driven by what the atmosphere forcing does to it. For example the atmosphere provides snowfall that will build up into a snowpack in the land model. The presence of absense of snowpack can make a huge difference to the atmosphere model. So taking some time to spinup the land model can be important for the interaction with other components. Also the deeper soil layers take longer to spinup. So it depends on what you are looking for to determine how long you should spinup the land model. The less you are interested in land processes, the less you might care about getting the land model fully spunup.
