Storm tracks

I am looking for the best variable to indicate stormtracks from a set of CAM runs. Is the VU, meridional flux of zonal momentum, the best variable to consider from the CAM history tapes? I was looking for an eddy flux variable but this is the most similar var I could find and I can't find any info on how it is calculated or what sign convention it uses?

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Eddy kinetic energy is probably the best variable and I think you can calculate it from history files with sqrt(UU-U^2+VV-V^2). Zonal average of this is a good measure of storm track baraoclinicity
