unit of the vertical coordinate in CESM2

In the output files of my CESM2 run the units of the vertical coordinate is given as "hPa" which does not really make sense for hybrid sigma-pressure coordinates. In the CESM1 outputs that are available to me, the unit was given as "levels". Is there any explanation for this difference?
