Updated solar_data_file, solar_parms_file, and spe_data_file for SD runs

We have an updated solar_data_file, solar_parms_file, and spe_data_file for recent runs with specified dynamics (SD), which we have made publicly available on our subversion input data repository.

solar_data_file (dates 19500101-20111231): inputdata/atm/cam/solar/spectral_irradiance_Lean_1950-2011_daily_Leap_c120426.nc

solar_parms_file (dates 19470410-20111222): inputdata/atm/waccm/solar/wasolar_1947-2011_daily_c120227.nc

spe_data_file (dates 19630101-20120101): inputdata/atm/waccm/solar/spes_1963-2011_c120302.nc

We have now updated these 3 files again, covering data through December 2012:
solar_data_file (dates 19500101-20121230): inputdata/atm/cam/solar/spectral_irradiance_Lean_1950-2012_daily_Leap_c130227.nc
solar_parms_file (dates 19470410-20121223): inputdata/atm/waccm/solar/wasolar_1947-2012_daily_c130227.nc
spe_data_file (dates 19630101-20130101): inputdata/atm/waccm/solar/spes_1963-2012_c130307.nc

Mike,
I have downloaded these updated solar parms and solar data files from the repository. However, I determined problems in the data sets. In at least the solar parms file, there are missing dates, and also times when it skips days such that the data f107 does not fall in sync with the ssi irradiance. For instance, in the parms file, there is a missing date 19500111 and there are other dates too. This causes days to be missing, causing a shift between ssi and f107. I think this may be why my solar waccm_1850 runs are not showing a clean solar cycle. Could you fix these files so that they are the same length in time. Otherwise, I don't know how to rectify the situation, or how to determine which dates are correct when I create my solar data for my runs.
Thanks,

We do have a number of missing dates in our solar input files, where data is missing. This is not a problem for WACCM, which interpolates at all times between dates given in a file. One must not assume that the dates are the same in each of the input files. If you wish to compare input files to each other, or to model output, you must ensure that you are comparing the same dates. NCL has routines to convert dates in YYYYMMDD to other time formats, such as YYYY.fraction, or day numbers. You will have to do some conversion like that if you wish to make time plots for comparison.

We have updated these files again to cover dates through February 2014:
  •  solar_parms_file (dates 19500101-20140220): inputdata/atm/waccm/solar/wasolar_1947-2014_daily_c140408.nc
  •  spe_data_file: inputdata/atm/waccm/solar/spes_1963-2013_c140415.nc
  •  solar_data_file: inputdata/atm/cam/solar/spectral_irradiance_Lean_1950-2013_daily_Leap_c130627.nc
The last 2 files have daily data through December 31 2013, but support runs through December 31, 2014 with constant values in 2014. For the solar_data_file, we also have a file that goes to February 28, 2014: spectral_irradiance_Lean_1978-2014_daily_GOME-Mg_Leap_c140412.nc. Please see the note in the metadata: "Unlike previous Lean data, this uses GOME Mg index for the facular component, giving slightly different values during the past two solar minima." These differences are less than 0.05%, so should be of no concern for most researchers.
